6.6 Creation of the UV-Tissue Windows

A new application of OC treatments to obtain physiological data and possible development of new diagnostic procedures results from recent research that was performed in the ultraviolet (UV) range. Until recently, the OC technique has been successfully applied to obtain results in the visible-NIR spectral range. Wondering what would be the effects of this technique in the UV range, a study on human colorectal muscle tissue under treatment with glycerol-water solutions with different osmolarities was done.

Treating tissues with 20%-, 40%-, and 60%-glycerol solutions, collimated transmittance Tc spectra were measured between 200 and 1000 nm. The Tc spectrum in this range for native colorectal muscle (sample thickness of 0.5 mm) is presented in Fig. 6.16.
